Reasons we sin:

I.       Self-preservation

A.    Bread to Stone

B.     “I had no choice”

1.      We all have basic needs for survival

2.      We are tempted when it does not seem those needs will be met without us meeting them ourselves by sinning.

3.      “I have to eat, don't I?”

4.      1 Corinthians 6:13

C.    Cure—Man will not live by bread alone-Deuteronomy 8:3

1.      Trust that God will meet and supply your needs

2.      Trust is essential to faithfulness.

3.      Part of growing spiritually is learning to trust His providence and protection.

4.      Philippians 4:19

II.    Self-promotion

A.    Throw Himself from temple

1.      This would show His importance to others or to Himself

2.      Announce to all even more proof of who He is, or would show to all and/or Himself that He is special to God.

B.     Building self esteem, showing self worth, building self worth.

1.      Very important in our culture—of highest importance for many

2.      Includes making a name for oneself, acting in a way to establish your own identity.

3.      “It's who I am, I am just being true to myself.”

4.      Homosexuals, polygamists, bestiality, child molestation

5.      Doing what you want because it is an expression of who you are.

C.    Cure for this: Do not tempt the Lord your God—Deuteronomy 6:16

1.      Tempting God means that we test His patience with us, or

III.  Self-fulfillment

A.    Give Him all the kingdoms of the world

B.     Getting what we deserve

C.    Cure: Worship and serve only God—Deuteronomy 6:13
